Sound too much like work? Well guess what?
I have been messin’ around with music for more than half my life. I have been running a rehearsal business for half of that musical life. I think by now I know what musicians need in terms of a rehearsal space…Solitude and a homey atmosphere.
Amenities like vending machines, basket ball hoops and big lounge areas are OK if you go to socialize,
but whenever I’ve spent money on a room, I was acutely aware that the clock was ticking. And if I needed a reminder, the studio owner would provide one by pounding on the door, saying time’s up way too soon!
It seems like time really flies when you’re making music. I think it has to do with the fact that when playing music, you are the creating time that is not based on a 60 second clock. You experience a sort of suspended animation. An hour seems like 20 minutes.
Often I’ve seen musicians emerging from their studio enclave like they are coming out of Dr. Who’s Tartus…all wild eyed and confused.
It is because of this loss of time perspective that a band must have their rehearsal “act” together to make the most out of the time spent in the studio. Even if you rent monthly, it is still all about getting work done.
